Self-build composting toilet in the Land Rover Defender
Max Sorg sent me his installation report on the composting toilet.
What is special here is that there is only limited space available. He built everything himself and bought the installation parts for the composting toilet at MeineTrenntoilette.de.
To the guidebook
1. materials required
- Square tube for frame
- Multiplex board 4 mm for wooden panelling
- Multiplex board 9 mm for lid
- Urine separator
- Urine bottle 4,4 L for composting toilet
- Wide-neck canister from Movera 28 × 41.5 × 17 cm
2. installation instructions
The multiplex boards are cut to the required size to fit the frame. The holes for the screws are pre-drilled and then everything is screwed to the frame.
There are recesses at the top of the frame so that the solids container fits.
The urine canister sits between two slats to prevent it from sliding back and forth. Before everything was screwed in place, a test was made to make sure that everything fits properly and can be removed easily.
Afterwards, it is much more difficult to change anything in the construction. What is important is the practicability.
The solids container is cut to the appropriate size. The lid for the urine canister was given a hole for the urine separator.
(Note from Markus: New in the range, you can also order matching lids with a hole or hose connection from me).
4 toilet paper rolls still fit next to it and stabilise the inserts of the composting toilet.
The urine separator was fitted into a thicker multiplex board, as this has to bear a corresponding weight. Therefore, 9 mm was chosen here.
The oval urine separator presented a challenge when milling the wooden panel.
3. Do-it-yourself composting toilet
This is what the finished composting toilet looks like in the Land Rover Defender. It is the perfect size to fit in the interior.
On top of that, it has an unladen weight of 6.5 kg. During the journey, the dry toilet is stored in the rear of the Defender, as can be seen in the picture.
It should also be mentioned that no fan has been installed.
